Parental Persecution

I am currently getting to know a man who is divorced, and sadly, his children did not take the divorce well. Particularly his oldest son. According to him, he and his son were super close until the divorce. Now, seven years later, he and his son have gotten into a number of spats. In the recent one, his son told him that he "wasn't s*%t" and that he was never there for him. He shared with me how much this devastated him and that he feels like all he can do is pray about it because every time he tries to fix things with him, he accidentally ends up making things worse.

Sunday was my mom's birthday and this conversation made me think about how as kids, and even as young adults (which are kids that can drink), we do not think that it is possible to hurt our parents' feelings. We do not think that it is possible, even when we are out of order, and say things to our parents that would have us in tears if someone said those very things to us. Our parents are like statues: they cannot be moved, they cannot be broken. And because of the inherent selfishness of children, the viewpoint is that parents are always trying to hurt us, regardless of the things that we have done and said.

This is a wisdom that comes with age, when you grow past a time when you think that it is impactful in an argument to just say mean things that you don't mean. By the time I was a senior in high school, I had had it with my mother. I found her to be super critical, and I hated her boyfriend. This was the root of most of our arguments. I said an unreal amount of hurtful things to my mom, trying to get her to see that she could do better and that her man was a jerk who was ruining our lives. We also fussed over how I wanted to stay in Atlanta to go to college, and she wanted me to leave the state. I felt like she wanted me to leave so she could love her loser in peace, and the fact that she was poor and willing to take out an exhorbandent amount of loans for me to go to school was a testiment to me of how badly she wanted me gone, not how badly she wanted me to get a good education. In my eyes, my mom was a rock, but I am positive that I hurt her feelings because I know that she hurt mine. If I could go back in time, I would encourage young me to go along to get along (which is what my grandma was advising me to do the whole time) so that I wouldn't have memories of me saying cruel things to my now deceased mom. Again, wisdom that comes with age.

This morning, Savannah posted a video of her daughter, (who puts me in mind of Strawberry Shortcake), getting on the school bus with the other kids in the neighborhood. There was a lot of smiling and waving. They seem to have a very good relationship. But as sure as that little girl's edges are laid, one day she is going to do something to hurt my friend's feelings. Maybe she will not answer her cell phone on purpose, leaving Savannah to assume she has been kidnapped, or maybe she will be super brutal and give Savannah the silent treatment. It's inevitable. But Cupcake will one day find out the same thing that my friend's son will find out and what I already know: doing so will also be very regretable.

Bad Dad

When I had lunch with my Dad when he was here, we talked about my half brothers and sisters. There are five or six of us in all. My dad is married, and has been for 18 years, and has a 17-year-old son, a junior, named Robert.
So I ask him over gumbo if his son is going to college. He doesn't know. Eyebrow raise. And so I ask if he and his son are close, seeing that they live in the same house. The answer is no. And I am like, how is that possible? He says that he is about as close to the son with his wife that lives in his house as he is to me. Not good. We text occasionally and he visits every two or three years. I ask him how this is even possible, and he says that it is because he is a bad father.
Bad Father. He said it nonchalantly, like he was saying his name. He went on to add that he works a lot and that none of his kids were planned.
This did not hurt my feelings. I was happy to hear him say these things. When I was kid, I figured he wasn't around because of something I did when I was too young to remember. When I was a preteen, I convinced myself that my mom had done something to make him go away. Now I see that his absence was no fault of mine or my mom's, and that is not only refreshing, but a big relief.
Before he left, he said he wanted to come back in November. I said OK, but I am not holding my breath on him coming. He may or may not. I just have to accept him for what he is.

Daddy Follow-Up

So DaddyDo finally came to visit me yesterday. We spent all day together. Funny, I had been ROYALLY pissed that he showed up late, but when he showed, I was all extra happy. We went to Red Lobster, then the movies (where Pops caught a nap), and then we took a pic together. Just thought I would share.

Daddy Annoyance

So, I finally reached Pops...after numerous texts and calls that went unanswered.
Just to catch you up, he was supposed to come on Wednesday. Then he said he was coming today. Now, this evening, after calling him all morning, he is saying he will be here in time for dinner and a movie on tomorrow.
At this point, he could come or he could not come, even though I really want to see him. I am now mad about his COMPLETE disregard for my time! I did nothing yesterday because I didn't want to miss his call- I wanted to be available if he just showed up looking for me at my house. Today, I did nothing, hoping he would just show up at the house. And tomorrow, I will do the same thing, because again, he was not clear on what time he would get here.
Guys, I am so annoyed at this point, I don't even know what to do.

Daddy Day

OK, so today my Dad is supposed to be coming into town.
Yesterday, he was texting me, asking me what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. So hopefully, hopefully that means he is really coming this time. I have showered. I am going to wash my hair so that my 'fro will be pretty. I am going to repaint my toes and look really cute: leggings and a poncho. I don't think I can even grasp right now how disappointed I will be if he pulls the okie doke.
I just texted him, asking him what time he will be getting in. No response as of yet. Not a good sign. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Guys, I am emotionally unstable. There is really no room in my life for devastating let-downs.

Daddy Visit

My Dad had been texting me earlier in the month to inform me that he was coming to Atlanta to visit me. I was actually quite excited to see him, seeing that I had not seen him since 2005. I did not grow up with my Dad, but I don't harbor harsh feelings. I am looking forward to chillin' with him though.
Anywho, he is supposed to be coming next week. I texted him to see what date he was actually coming, no response. I really hope that he doesn't renig, but I get a feeling he may.
No matter how old you are or whether or not your Dad raised you, you still feel disappointed when he breaks promises or plans. Hopefully, I will hear from him by the end of the weekend.
